In today's environment of reorganization of healthcare delivery in the United States, many nurse practitioners and crna's are choosing to become employees of health care organizations, established medical groups, hospitals etc. rather than incur the increasing expense of starting or continuing their own practice. As a result, many nurse practitioners and crna's are now being covered by employment contracts. The employment contract not only outlines party’s responsibilities of the employer and physician but provides an underlying tone of the relationship as well.
Employment contracts often involve complex interactions of contract and employment law and are often difficult to understand. Often a nurse practitioner or crna is recruited to a practice or health care organization and after discussing general terms of employment is presented with a complex contract 15-20 pages in length and requested to sign and return to the prospective employer in a short time frame.
It is very important to establish your financial and professional goals at the onset and view the contract in terms of your goals and objectives. No nurse practitioner or crna should ever enter in an employment contract without fully understanding the terms and conditions of that contract.
It is highly recommended that you consult an attorney familiar with health care employment contracts to assist you in understanding the terms of the contract as well as negotiating the employment contract on your behalf. As a nurse practitioner or crna, you should realize that often employers are willing to negotiate the terms of the contract as well as the wording of the employment contact.
The Law Office of John Hutto represents nurse practitioners and crna's in reviewing or negotiating employment contracts. If you are a nurse practitioner or crna and are considering entering into an employment contract in Alabama, the Law office of John Hutto is available to assist you in reviewing or negotiating the terms of the contract.
